How to Adapt Your House When Two Becomes Three

So as the Kids are going back to school we thought we would do a post on how to adapt your house when expecting a baby.  Perhaps you would like to buy a bigger home but are not sure if it is necessary or not.  What you should be looking at is a good outdoor area, a good space for the day and more storage.

It would be wise to create a good kitchen area to make space for when you will be using a high chair, and also since the kitchen is generally the heart of any home where a lot of time is spent.  Think about connecting the kitchen and dining area to make a bigger space and also you can use this extra space to keep an eye on the little one while you are busy doing other things in the kitchen.  You can also now buy high chairs that will adapt as the child grows.  This way you can keep eating times in the kitchen/dining area at all times to keep the living area clean.

When it comes to the living room you will need as much space as possible as you will most likely have play mats etc on the floor.  If you don´t have much space then try sacrificing some space from an adjoining room.  Get rid of any old furniture that you no longer need and have a good clear out to get rid of any clutter.  Remember children will grab and try and get hold of anything and everything so put any objects you don´t want broken high up.  You want a layout where you can keep your eyes on the little one, keep areas as open as possible. There are also sofas now that come with two covers with the top one being machine washable.  Perfect for when you have a little one and may have some accidents on there.   Avoid tables with glass and buy furniture with rounded edges rather than pointed edges.  If you have any bookcases make sure you screw them to the wall, as the child grows you want to avoid accidents where they may grab onto things and pull themselves to stand up, you don´t want furniture falling on them.  If you have lights that are low down, use led lights as they are cool to the touch.

Remember when choosing a bedroom for your child that they grow quick so it is wise to pick furniture that will be versatile and can be used for several ages.  It needs to be bright and cheerful and you will want it to be close to your own room so its easy to check on them at night and so you can hear them if they need you.  Once again storage is key as children tend to end up with lots of toys especially around Christmas and birthdays.  Look for cots/beds with storage underneath.  Chairs with storage built in and good shelving units.

For flooring try to use softer materials for when the child is playing on the floor and also when the child starts crawling.  Think about using a rug on the area where you think they will spend the most time.

If you have a big garden perhaps you want to section of a part of it just for the children, that way you can keep and eye on them but still give them the freedom of moving around and playing.  Try to use solid chairs rather than folding chairs.  Again keep the area clean and not overgrown so you easily maintain it while you are busy with the little one.  If you have a pool then you should perhaps fence it off to avoid any accidents and also if you have a driveway then put a gate between the drive and the garden.  This way when your child is old enough and starts running they do not run off into the driveway in front of a moving car.

So that is it, just some basics on preparing your house for a new addition.  Remember, your time will be mostly with them so you need to plan your space to be easy to maintain and move around.

How To Enjoy The Last Few Weeks Off School With The Kids

If you are out of ideas of how to entertain the kids for the last part of the summer holidays then Marbella is the best place to be.  With this beautiful weather the easiest thing to do is get outdoors, just remember your sun cream and plenty of water.  Try to keep in the shade during the hottest part of the day.

The best thing to do is get down to the beach and if you have smaller children at the far end of the paseo (near the fisherman's port) they have a children's play area.

Most places are open late this time of year as its so hot people prefer to go out in the evening.   Tivoli World which is perhaps the largest theme park on the coast is open till 1 o clock in the morning.  Perfect for tiring out the little ones enabling you and them to get a lie in in the morning.

If you are looking for all day kinda fun plus a good way to stay cool then try the biggest aqua park on the coast.  Aqualand in Torremolinos.

There is also a aqua park in Mijas, Aquamijas.

If your kids are animal lovers then there are plenty of places to take them.  Perhaps the most famous one is selwo.  They have an animal park with lions etc.  They also have a marina with dolphins etc but it is in a different town.  If you want something a bit more scary then try the crocodile park.

If your kids are older then they may want something a bit more action packed like zip lining or paintballing.

For those of you that are not scared of heights try the cable car in Benalmedena.

So as you can see there are plenty of things to do and you can get discounts if you book for multiple parks so look out for ticket packs on their website.

If that seems too action packed then stick to relaxing on the beach or your swimming pool.

Why Expats Should Not Panic and Rush Back to UK

With the consequences of Brexit still unclear there are some British already packing to go back to the UK in fear that things may turn pear shaped.

First of all we do not actually know what the final outcome will be, things are so unclear and wouldn't you be upset if you upped and moved back only to find you could have actually stayed in your home abroad with no problem?   Plus once you leave, if a good solution is reached, you may not be able to afford to come back and start again.  Would you regret your decision?

Many people who sell their home in Spain and France will find the money they make will not be enough to buy a property in the UK and may leave them with more money troubles than if they just stayed put.

For Spain the British Expats and tourists bring in a lot of money for their country, so it's in their interest to come up with a solution to make it easy for Brits to move freely otherwise they will risk a big drop in their own economy.

Many people worry about not being able to get healthcare, before rushing back why not get some quotes on private healthcare, you may be surprised at how affordable and useful it can be.  Plus if Brexit goes really bad there is a chance the UK will no longer be able to provide free healthcare anymore as they may not be making enough income to support the service.  With the shortage of nurses and doctors, how long would you have to wait to get seen by a doctor?  Would it make a difference in the treatment you receive?

Some have also raised concerns about their pension but as things also are not clear it is best to wait and see exactly what will happen after Brexit.  If you are really worried make sure to keep following the news on this issue to see what the outcome may be for your pension.  Also bear in mind that many products in Britain have gone up in price since Brexit so your pension may not spread as far as it did in the past.

So as you can see there are already a number of things to consider before panicking and making a dash back to the UK.  Even with all this up in the air we still have many Brits escaping and buying property here so why would you up and leave your home when its not even clear what the final outcome will be.  Think about it if every single British expat fled back to the UK then the country would be bursting at the seams with people.  It could not possibly cope with the amount of people so they will have to come up with a solution to suit everyone.  There are still people in hope that Brexit will still not go through.

In our opinion it is best to try and wait it out until there are more clear answers before making any rash decision.  However if you do decide to sell up or on the flip side if you are looking to leave the UK and move to Marbella then contact us to help you sell or buy your property.
