Perhaps you live in an apartment and have no outdoor space. Or perhaps all the Marbella sun is burning your flowers. Maybe you just love the idea of bringing the outdoors indoors. Whatever the reason is creating an indoor garden may not be as easy as you think. Follow these tips to help make your indoor garden a success.
First you need to decide what it is you are doing. Maybe you have some plants that you are starting to grow indoors that you will eventually move outdoor when they are strong enough. Perhaps you are wanting to grow your own fruits and vegetables or perhaps just wanting you indoor to look more green. Check which plants grow well indoors, for fruit and veg you can try tomatoes, eggplant, strawberries, beans and peas. Herbs are good for growing indoors too as are cactus, lily, marigold and begonias.
You need to chose where you are wanting to put your plants carefully. Read up on the plants you are growing and how much sunshine they need. Then decide which window they need to be near, one which has sun all day or one that just has a little sunlight. Make sure not to place any plants near the fan/heater or air conditioning, this could make them die off. There are also special heat lamps for growing plants indoors as well so you need to decide how dedicated you want to be and if you want to put in that amount of effort and expenditure.
Be sure to get a good brand of soil. This can make a big difference to how well you plants grow, or alternatively how quick they die off!! How much water do your plants need? Again read up on the plants because you may have one that needs water everyday and one that needs it just once a week. You may need to set reminders for yourself to remember to do it. Also you can buy systems that drop water on your plants each day and has a timer if you need it.
Think about what containers you want to use. Perhaps you will buy regular tubs from the store, perhaps you have lots of old nice looking vases stuffed in the back of the cupboard somewhere. Or perhaps you want to recycle containers you use in the kitchen for food or drink, just make sure there are no chemicals so it doesn't kill off your plants.
Make sure you keep an eye on your plants to see how they are doing. Remove any dead leaves, also check that they are not getting too much or too little water and sunshine. If you are trying to revive a plant keep it away from the others just in case they are carrying a disease that they can pass on. If you notice bugs and pests then buy a pesticide, be sure to research your plant again as to which pesticide is best. Or research a pesticide you can make yourself with things you already have in your kitchen. Remember if you are growing things to eat you have to be very careful with what you use. Research what you can, if you go to the garden shop you can always ask them their what they recommend.
And that is it. Just a few tips to help you on your way with an indoor garden. Like I said its not easy. Also if you find it too difficult then there are always plastic plants which don't need the upkeep, just a dust now and then! ?
