The first really simple and easy change is to paint all your walls white. You want to keep the floors and walls simple and light. Stick to white and beige for your floors and walls.
You want to keep the furniture bright as well so if you are at a point where you can redecorate then chose a light colour sofa and storage units. If you are not wanting to change your furniture then you can always buy a light coloured throw for your sofa to brighten it up.
Try to not put high furniture if you can as that way you can use the empty wall space to bounce light around the room.
If you don´t get much natural light then use halogen lamps as they are a similar effect to having the sunlight inside. If you can, do not use curtains on the windows, leave it open to let as much light in as possible. If you need a curtain then it is best to use a roller blind as when it is open it does not obstruct any of the window.
Also make sure nothing is blocking the windows, get rid on any clutter on the window sills. You can also see when the light comes through and check if there are any pieces of furniture, plants or anything else blocking light then relocate these to another part of the room.
Lastly you can put up mirrors to multiply the light around the room.
